I had seriously debated posting a flowery ode to chocolate, and then went against it. It doesn’t matter how over the top, ornate, or long winded my “ode” to chocolate was, it still could not completely captivate my deep and honest love I have for it.
There is a website called Enjoy Dark Chocolate. For real. This is a real thing in our world. They had some interesting things to say about chocolate and your mental and physical well being:
Dark chocolate is a psychoactive food, containing over 300 chemical elements. This means that when you slip a piece into your mouth, you’re imbibing a natural chemical cocktail that impacts your body. Research has shown that many of these affects are positive ones.
Like many dark fruits and vegetables, cacao beans also deliver a large dose of polyphenols, another type of antioxidant. Polyphenols are known to help combat the ravages of lifestyle disease, most specifically, heart disease by relaxing blood vessels and reducing inflammation related to coronary artery disease. In fact, 50 grams of this chocolate contain more antioxidants than a glass of red wine. It turns out that chocoholics were right all along, their tasty addiction is good for the heart.
Dark Chocolate may also improve your mental health. The bitter, smooth flavor by itself is enough to dash your worries and stress away, but the mouthwatering confection also causes the release of neurotransmitters, which speak directly to the brain. They tell the brain very good things, helping to improve the flow of endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins are known to improve mood, lessen pain and relieve stress. Serotonin is the brain’s feel good chemical, and plays a large part in promoting feelings of happiness and wellbeing.
Of course, I can’t just eat dark chocolate all day, but it makes me feel pretty happy about my sweet tooth indulgences on occasion. Rather than bore you with facts and statistics about cacao (yes, there is a difference between cocoa and cacao) and its benefits I wanted to compile a list of the best raw cacao powder treats that are mostly vegan and “healthy” for you (as healthy as a chocolate recipe can get).
Hope you’re having a fabulous Monday! More recipes to come this week and an update on my current facial massage routine. I’ll also give an update on my juice fast and how I broke it. Later!
