PowerHouse Purchase: Almond Meal.

When my stomach was at its worst and REALLY angry with me everyday, I was convinced I was gluten intolerant.  I think this was mostly due to anti-gluten media campaigns I would see everywhere.  Instead of using flour in baking and cooking recipes, I switched over to almond meal and I was incredibly surprised.

First off, if you go to any grocer and check out the alternatives to the run-of-the-mill flour, you may see almond meal AND almond flour.  The difference is simple:  almond meal is made from unblanched nuts (skin on), and with the flour it has been blanched (skin off).  I don’t notice a huge difference in taste but swapping the two seems to effect texture….I haven’t had this experience though.

Why you NEED to own this shtuff:  Almond meal adds a hint of nuttiness and moisture to your cooking recipes.  One of my favorites is Turkey Bacon-Wrapped Chorizo and Meatloaf.  Yes.  Meatloaf.  Plus bacon.  OMG.  FER REAL.

When adding the meal to baking recipes, you can play up on the nutty flavor by adding flavors that complement its taste.  Rich spices like cinnamon and nutmeg bring out the almond flavor and, of course, vanilla is a subtle but flavorful buddy.

Almond flour is an excellent source of vitamin E.  In other words, it is an antioxidant that serves to protect cells against damaging free radicals.  Almond flour is also a great source of B vitamins like niacin.  You won’t get that flush….you niacin-ers know what’s up.

Almonds themselves are full of monounsaturated fats which can help lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of blood clots, and lower blood pressure.  Ingesting the meal within your favorite recipes that call for flour is a quick way to help that ole ticker of yours.
